The Toyota J40 is the model designation for a Toyota Land Cruiser 40 series made from 1960 until 1984. Most 40 series Land Cruisers were built as two-door vehicles with slightly larger dimensions than a Jeep CJ.
The J40 was powered by either a 3.8L or a 4.2L I6 petrol engine, These F engines respectively produced 105 hp and 135 hp), or by a diesel engine from a range of 3.0L I4 to 3.7L I6. The 4-cylinder diesel engines were called the B engines. The 6-cylinder diesel engines were called the H engines. Model designations of FJ, BJ and HJ referred to the kind of engines under the hood.

The ones built from 1962 through 1993, with the Mercedes-Benz engines received OJ50/55 series, and ones built from 1994 through 2001 with Toyota engines, were given BJ50/55 series model codes. Models produced from 1989 on featured square headlights, instead of the round ones used before. Another visible mayor characteristic with the Bandeirante's hard top models are the one-piece hind doors rather than the traditional Toyota two-wing hind doors.
