In 1949, German coachbuilders Hebmüller and Karmann were comissioned by 
 Volkswagen to build two Cabriolets based on the Beetle Type 1 chassis. 
Hebmüller built the 2 seat model and Karmann the 4 seat model.  
Production of the Hebmüller models ended in 1953 after a fire destroyed  the factory
