Honda S660 Roadster (2015-?)

Picking up where the Pininfarina-designed Toyota Beat left off in 1996, the S660 is heir to a proud tradition of Japanese roadsters like the Suzuki Cappuccino and Daihatsu Copen – two-seat convertibles designed to Japan's Kei car specifications and even smaller than the Mazda MX-5 Miata or Toyota MR2 Spyder.

The Honda S660 concept bowed at the 2013 Tokyo Motor Show. In April 2015, the production Honda S660 roadster goes on sale in Japan. And while there are some clear similarities with the EV-STER concept that debuted in 2011 in Tokyo, the S660 looks closer to production-ready, with key features like an actual steering wheel. Like the Beat, the S660 is a compact roadster with a mid-engine, rear-drive setup. It offers a lower center of gravity and a 45/55 front/rear weight distribution. The roadster is said to have a rigid and lightweight body. A new Agile Handling Assist electronic control system uses brake torque to maximize handling. Power comes from a turbocharged 660-cc three-cylinder engine that produces maximum power of 64 hp at 6000 rpm and 77 lb-ft of torque.

For the time being, Honda will only offer the S660 in its home market. There buyers will be able to choose between a six-speed manual or continuously variable transmission (CVT) with sport mode, paddle shifters, and seven simulated gears, two trim levels, leather or fabric seats, six paint colors and a Concept Edition that adopts a similar color scheme as the 2013 show car. (motortrend.com, autoguide.com & autoblog.com)
